Cadets To March Through Arch

The ceremonial march through the Memorial Arch at Royal Military College happens today.

As is tradition, new officer-cadets pass through the Commemorative Arch as a class on their first day of university and again upon graduation.

Following the march, cadets will form up at the RMC parade square in front of Commodore Bill Truelove, Commandant of RMC, who will address the entire Cadet Wing.

Class of 2014 To Be Welcomed Monday

Daniel Woolf will spend the weekend putting the final touches on his speech to welcome the class of 2014.

The Principal of Queens will be joined by Mayor Harvey Rosen, and faculty, staff, alumni and current Queen’s students for the traditional welcoming ceremony for incoming students on the front lawn of Summerhill, the oldest building on Queen’s campus.

Aboriginal dancers will perform prior to the ceremony, which will open with a blessing from an Aboriginal elder.

Fallen trees cause downed power lines

Luckily noone was injured following a power outage caused by fallen trees.

Two locations were affected. The first was on County Road 64 in Murray Township, where a single tree fell across the road

The second,  fell on Oak Lake Road downing hydro lines and caused a small fire.

Officials extinguished the blaze, and wires in the area have since been restored.

Barriefield Village proposal heads to council Tuesday

The affordable housing proposal for Barriefield village will be voted on by Council on Tuesday September 7th.

City staff estimate the Barriefield project could cost taxpayers nearly one-million dollars before anything is built

The final report which includes a study by outside consultants is costing up to $250,000.00 alone.

The report projects it could take an estimated three years before construction begins.

Muscular Dystrophy Fundraiser on Monday

Loyalist Township Emergency Services is holding a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy on Monday.

Two locations are inviting residences to take part in activities to support the cause.

Both Odessa and Amhertsview locations are holding a Boot Drive from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with a pancake breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. at community hall in Amhertsview.

Closures during Labour day long weekend

A number of closures and changes for the labour day long weekend.

There will be no garbage collection on monday, and city officials are asking residents to put out their garbage, green bin and recycling out the day after your regular day.

Kingston Transit will be running on a holiday service.

Wading Pools and Splash Pads will be open for the last day of the season on Monday.

The complete list of City schedules affected by the Labour Day holiday include:

* Administrative Offices: All administrative offices, including Social Services, Provincial Offences and Utilities Kingston are closed on Monday. In the event of a utility emergency, such as a gas smell or a water main break, call the Utilities Kingston 24-hour number at 613-546-1181.

* Kingston Transit: runs on a holiday service (modified Sunday service). Please plan your trip using the My Trip Planner at www.cityofkingston.ca/tripplanner.

* Garbage, Green Bin and recycling: There is no collection on Monday. For the rest of the week, collection occurs the day after your regular day.

* Kingston Area Recycling Centre/ King East Landfill: Closed.

* Portsmouth Olympic Harbour: Closed.

* Artillery Park Aquatics & Fitness Centre: Closed. It remains closed for facility maintenance reopening on Sept. 20.

* Oakwood Day Care: Closed.

* Wading Pools and Splash Pads: Open. Sept. 6 is the last day of the season.

* INVISTA Centre: Closed.

* Libraries: All branches of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library are closed Monday.

* Grand Theatre Box Office: Closed

Moving In Weekend Here

The city’s population will swell this weekend when thousands of students move to Kingston.

Almost 4 thousand first year Queen’s students will be moving into dorm rooms on Saturday at both the main and west campus.

Some streets around the residences will be re-routed as one-way on Saturday to accommodate the extra traffic throughout the day.

Dumpster Fires Overnight

Fire truck sirens could be heard a few times overnight in the west end of Kingston.

Four dumpster fires were started by someone in that part of the city.

Kingston Police are handling investigating.

Deadline To Fill Out Nomination Papers Looms

Time is running out to fill out nomination papers to run in the municipal election.

The deadline is a week from today.

There are currently six people in the running for Mayor.

Election Day for all municipalities in the Province of Ontario is Monday, October 25, 2010. On this day voters in the City of Kingston will elect a Mayor, City Council members, and School Board Trustees to represent them in this community for the next four years.

Advance voting days are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16, and Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The term of office is December 1, 2010 to November 30, 2014.

Frontenacs to hold Union Night for unionized employees

Union members of all stripes will be honoured at an upcoming Kingston Frontenacs game.

The Frontenacs Home Opener on Friday, Sept. 24th will also be union night. Tickets for union members are just $12.

They can be purchased beginning this Tuesday at the box office at the KRC.

The Mississauga St. Mike’s Majors will be the visiting team for the Fronts home opener.

Promotional Ad for Kingston Airport wins Marketing Award

Kingston Airport has won an international marketing award for its print ad.

The “From Here to Anywhere” ads won first place in the print advertising category of the Airport Council International marketing and communications contest.

The category received submissions from 55 airports from around the world including the Aeroports de Montreal, which placed second, and Denver and Louisville International Airports which tied for third.

Brian Dodo of BmDodo Strategic Design designed the promotional print ad.

Police raid Addington Highlands home and find drugs and weapons

O.P.P. have laid several weapons and drug charges against two people following a raid at an Addington Highlands Township home yesterday.

Members of Project Round-Up including Napanee and Frontenac O.P.P. executed a search warrant at a home on 5th Concession North, where they seized 31 grams of marijuana and 20 pounds of cannabis.

Police also seized two cross bows, pellet guns and two .22 caliber riffles.

As a result, police have arrested and charged Linda Sebastiao, 33, of Addington Highlands Township and Daniel Fougere, 42, of Quinte West. They are each charged with:

1) Unauthorized Possession of Weapon, contraty to section 91(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada
2) Possession of a Weapon for the Dangerous Purpose, contraty to section 88 of the Criminal Code of Canada
3) Production Schedule II (cannabis marihuana), contrary to section 7(1) of the Control Drug Substance Act.
4) Possession Schedule II (canabis marihuana ), contrary to section 4(1) of the Control Drub Substance Act.
5) Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon Ammunition

Sebastiao and Fougere will appear in Napanee court for a bail hearing. Police are still investigating.
